To judge from a recent auction of Christie's, King Street, Persian carpets need no help from the US administration in fetching sky-high prices. At the sale of art looted by the Nazis from the Austrian branch of the Rothschild family during the second World War, a 16th century Tabriz Medallion carpet from North West Persia sold for just under $2.5m, beating the world record for a carpet. It was eleven times more than the estimate.
