The Quest for a Perfect Persian Rug (Part 2)

My dad tells me his father took great care in picking his rugs. Apparently he would scratch the back of them before buying. This sounded a little odd until I started looking for myself, and I realized the back of a handmade rug gives up many secrets. It’s here you really get to appreciate the intricacy of the weaving, with some rugs counting more than a million knots per square meter.
My grandfather had rugs from Isfahan in central Iran, I am told, which means he had good taste. If he was buying today, he’d need deep pockets. They are often made of high-quality kurk wool woven onto silk warps, and can easily run into the tens of thousands of pounds to buy—particularly those from the famous Seirafian workshop.

The Quest for a Perfect Persian Rug (Part 1)

YOU DON’T NORMALLY spend thousands of pounds on a piece of art, then walk all over it. Unless you’re in the market for a Persian rug, that is.
I recently picked up the keys to my first apartment, and my mind was full of rugs— the colorful beauties that covered the marble floors of my grandfather’s home in Homs, Syria. These are gone now (while a Persian rug can survive many things, a civil war is not one of them), but the thought of them always conjures images of a large house full of people, welcoming and open to all. This is, I think, the kind of home most of us hope to make.

About Tabriz Carpet (Part 3)

These new carpets are symmetrically knotted and have simpler weft arrangement. The highly varied designs include medallion schemes in curvilinear draftsmanship as well as imitations of classic carpet patterns from other parts of Persia. The designs have been criticized as too regular and mechanical, and the coloring as too hard, the old vegetable dyes having been largely supplanted by European chrome and aniline. The wool is said to be harsher than that used in other Iranian centers, resulting in a stiffer, crisper pile. Instead of using the fingers to tie the knots, it is a local custom among the weavers to use a knife with a projection like a button hook. By this means they can develop higher speed than the weavers in other districs and have been timed at faster than one knot per second.

The End.

About Tabriz Carpet (Part 2)

These carpets usually show a medallion decorative scheme, ranging from a single medallion to the complexity of a star centerpiece with pendants car-touches, reflected by quarter-medallions similarly elaborated in the corners of the field. The ground pattern often featured coiled arabesque vine work. From the mid 19th century there has been a revival of commercial carpet production in Iran, and Tabriz has been one of the most important centers in the country, producing carpets of widely varying quality, largely destined for Europe.
